Discover Candle Tunneling

Candle tunneling is a term used to describe a common issue that occurs when a candle burns unevenly, leaving a tunnel-like hole in the center of the candle while the outer wax remains untouched. This phenomenon can happen when a candle is not burned properly, usually due to a short initial burn time or improper wick trimming.

When a candle is burned for too short of a time during its initial use, the wax around the wick does not have a chance to melt fully, creating a tunnel-like hole in the center. This can also occur if the wick is not trimmed properly, as a long wick can cause the candle to burn too quickly and not melt the surrounding wax evenly.

When a candle is first lit, the wax melts, forming a pool of liquid wax around the wick. This melted wax is then drawn up the wick and burned. The wax pool expands and contracts as the candle burns, and the wick is consumed. When the candle is extinguished, the wax pool cools and solidifies.

To prevent candle tunneling, it is essential to follow proper candle-burning guidelines. This includes allowing the candle to burn for sufficient time during its initial use and trimming the wick to 1/4 inch before each use. By following these guidelines, you can ensure that your candles burn evenly and last longer.

For mild tunneling: If your candle begins to tunnel (burn down the center, leaving wax along the sides), try using a candle warmer or carefully melting the wax along the edges with a hair dryer on a low setting to create an even melt pool. You can even take your vessel and slowly move it in a circular motion so that the melted wax can heat the wax buildup on the sides to begin melting down. 

For deeper tunneling: You can try the aluminum foil method. Wrap a sheet of aluminum foil around the top of the candle, creating a tent-like structure with an opening for the wick. This concentrates heat and helps melt the wax more evenly. Be cautious as the foil can get hot.

• Always trim the wick to 1/4 inch (6 mm) before each lighting.
• Burn the candle for at least 2-3 hours at a time to allow the wax pool to reach the edges.
• Avoid burning candles in drafty areas.

By following these tips, you can enjoy your crystal candle with an even burn for its entire lifespan. Remember, proper care is essential for optimal performance and safety.
